from 1982, “ziggy’s gift.” ziggy doesn’t talk, but the music’s by harry nilsson. until now, i didn’t know that nilsson had anything to do with it or that the film had won an emmy. it was just a favorite christmas special whose theme was among the few songs for which i know all the words. they go:
this winter is the stupidest thing i’ve ever been a part of.
i am pretty sure fishmans is a you-had-to-be-there deal, but i still love them from here. this set, with the violinist honzi (who, like singer shinji sato, died suddenly, died young), was my introduction. it was memerizing, just waves of feeling, impenetrable magic but for spiral stairs in part 3 breaking the spell by asking someone, “what are they saying?!” afterward, i bought all the band merch but still can’t bring myself to wear a t-shirt that says “i’m fish.”
